Hathaway was formed in 1988 by David S. Hathaway in order to pursue real estate development opportunities.  Prior to starting the company, Mr. Hathaway had an extensive background in banking, real estate finance and development. He was responsible for the development of several projects while acting as President of Liberty Properties, Inc., which was a subsidiary of Liberty Savings Bank, better known today as BB&T. Mr. Hathaway was developing single family homes for several years when in 1996 he purchased a plot of land in Macon, Georgia and re-zoned the property into commercial, multi-family and single-family residential. With a portion of the property, Mr. Hathaway developed Northridge Subdivision, a 235 lot, single-family housing community. With the remaining acreage, he initiated his first multi-family housing development, Northwood Apartment Homes. This 220-unit apartment community was completed in May of 1997 and rendered final construction costs of $7.8 million. The property quickly stabilized and was sold later the same year. The successful completion and sale of Northwood Apartment Homes paved the way for Hathaway and the future growth of one of the leading multi-family developers and builders in the southeast.

In February of 1998, a decision was made to expand Hathaway's reach into construction and general contracting, thus creating a competitive advantage for Hathaway Properties and an opportunity to pursue additional business opportunities in the form of third-party GC business. Since the inception of Hathaway Construction, Hathaway has expanded its area of operation to include Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Through it's history, Hathaway has acquired, developed and built over 12,000 units of multi-family housing for a variety of owners. Specifically as an operator/owner, Hathaway has developed and/or acquired roughly 31 assets over the years.

Hathaway continues to be a proven leader in the investment, development and construction of multi-family communities.
